About the Department
Himachal Pradesh Technical University (HPTU), formerly known as HimTU, is a prominent State Technical University located in Hamirpur, Himachal Pradesh. Established under the Himachal Pradesh Technical University Act, 2010 (Act No: 16 of 2010), it received the Governor’s assent on July 28th, 2010 and came into force on Aug 21st, 2010. The creation of HPTU marked a major step forward in advancing technical education in the state, with a mandate to nurture excellence in teaching, research, innovation and professional development across engineering, pharmacy, management and allied disciplines.
Prof. (Dr.) Shashi Kumar Dhiman assumed charge as the founding Vice-Chancellor on January 7th, 2011, laying the foundation for the academic and administrative leadership of the University. During his tenure New Syllabus was implemented. Over the first decade of its functioning, HPTU operated from temporary facilities while building its institutional framework, developing curricula, and affiliating technical colleges across the state.
Under the leadership of Prof. (Dr.) R.L. Sharma, Vice-Chancellor, HPTU became the first University in Himachal Pradesh to implement the Choice Based Credit System (CBCS) curriculum and initiated the construction of its permanent campus, marking the beginning of its physical and institutional consolidation.
During the tenure of Prof. (Dr.) S.P. Bansal, Vice Chancellor, University achieved national recognition for successfully implementing the World Bank assisted Technical Education Quality Improvement Programme (TEQIP). Through this initiative the University strengthened infrastructure, faculty development and research capabilities, reflecting HPTU’s commitment to quality technical education. A landmark moment came in Aug, 2020 when HPTU moved to its newly built, state of the art campus at Daruhi village, Hamirpur.
In May 2022, Prof. (Dr.) Shashi Kumar Dhiman was reappointed as Vice-Chancellor, marking a renewed phase of growth. Under his visionary leadership, HPTU continues to expand its academic reach, promote research and innovation and strengthen industry partnerships. From the academic session 2023-24, the University became the first in Himachal Pradesh to implement the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, aligning its academic structure with contemporary national reforms and priorities.
Today, HPTU stands as a leading University in the state, dedicated to fostering technical expertise, research, and innovation, and serving as a catalyst for social and economic development through education.
